Reliving History: Simulating the UN Partition of Palestine

When: Spring 2009

It is April of 1947, and the United Nations Special Commission Palestine (UNSCOP) has been convened to investigate the "Palestine Problem". UNSCOP has a monumental task ahead of it; one that will change the course of history. What will happen to the Arabs of Palestine, and to the Jews of Palestine who have competing claims to the same land?

Students are currently revisiting the year 1947 and have assumed the roles of the UNSCOP negotiators, members of the Arab Higher Committee, and the Jewish Agency Executive, as well as other parties who influenced these deliberations. Based on their in-class negotiations, they will make their own series of recommendations. They will then step out of their "characters" and return to the historical record, in order to learn what really transpired and how their negotiations differed.
